You Have to Tell the World What You’ve Witnessed
I wrestled with the question of whether to share when I teach somewhere dangerous or notorious, especially in this age of social media. A mentor told me that I have to share my experience. It’s not about showing off. It’s about telling others what I’ve seen. #moralcompass

Loving Yourself
Helping Others Helps Me Love Myself
Not everything I do needs to be perfect and positive. Part of loving myself is letting myself be blue. But I find that helping others—especially marginalized populations—helps me love myself. It gives me perspective on material desires that can be toxic. #selflove #lovingyourself #ownership #money #society

Don’t Rush to Make a Judgement or Take Action
To make deep connections, listen. A bartender once remarked that Sam Shepard, a regular customer, is a great playwright because he listens. Similarly, I’m better at helping incarcerated teens when I listen before I impose my help. #givingback #listen

Have a Yes Mindset
I asked a mentor about a commencement speech he gave inside a prison. He told me about Literacy for Incarcerated Teens. I called the organization immediately and proposed a workshop. That turned into multiple workshops. Saying yes has helped me make something wonderful. #justdoit #inspiration

How to Absorb, Even When Meeting Someone Like Dikembe Mutombo
I follow my own advice to be absorbed versus observing when I meet big-name celebrities. I try to stay absorbed in the moment, even when meeting NBA stars. #mindfulness #elite #bepresent

Observer vs. Absorber
I tell the celebrities I coach that to have an impact on others, they need to be totally absorbed in what they’re doing. They cannot simply observe themselves on stage. #mindfulness #coaching #mission

Make Introductions Without an Agenda
When I meet someone, I first wonder whom I can connect that person with. Some people seek payment for making those connection. My reward is seeing two people do something spectacular and knowing that I had a part in that. #givingback #connection

Willem Dafoe Taught Me It’s Hard to Connect When Your Hands Are Shaking
I do get starstruck. I did a little work with Willem Dafoe. One time he invited me over for a glass of wine and my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. It was awkward, and being starstruck made it harder to connect. #mindfulness #elite #connection

In the Moment With 50 Cent (Part 1)
While pursuing an acting career, a casting director called and asked if I would read a script with 50 Cent. I focused on staying absorbed in the moment so 50 could get the best out of our interaction. #mindfulness #elite

In the Moment With 50 Cent (Part 2)
After reading lines with 50 Cent, he asked me to coach him for an audition. At one point, I found myself starstruck. I wasn’t giving him my best. I excused myself and reminded myself to be absorbed in the moment. When I returned, I helped 50 nail the scene. #mindfulness #elite #mission

Meeting Oprah: With Social Equity, Patience Is Key
I met Oprah at a barbeque. I saw how people reacted with a sense of urgency to meet her and it was an important lesson for me. With social equity and human capital, patience is key. So I held back and waited for the right time to connect. #mindfulness #elite #connection

Mentorship Is About Being Vulnerable
Mentorship is people being real with each other. It has a lot in common with vulnerability. In fact, when I examine vulnerability with prisoners, we find that vulnerability brings out our strengths. It’s the same with mentorship. #vulnerability #inspiration #success

Where Do You Sit in the Eyes of Society?
Social status is where you sit in the eyes of society. Today, it’s connected with social media. Social status depends on how people view you. Are you helpful? Are you meaningful? #socialstatus

To Refocus, Stay on the Mission
To overcome stage fright, I ask myself, “What’s the mission?” I used this technique when I worked with Nile Rodgers. Whenever I felt nervous in his presence, I reminded myself of my mission—why I was working with Nile in the first place. #anxiety #fear #mission
