Reactions to Talking About My Disability
The worst reaction I get when talking about my disability is the stare without the questions. With a stare, there is never an opportunity for a conversation to be had. The best reaction I get, which is a personal preference, is when someone asks to see my nerve injury. When someone embraces that, it makes me feel like they’re hugging the whole me. #diversability #disabilities #society #reactions

Facilitating Conversation Around Disabilities
In October 2009, I was invited by my university to speak at a conference about disabilities. I brought up the idea to start a club at my university about facilitating conversation around disabilities. This experience started with just me but resonated with others and I was in awe that people showed up. #diversability #disabilities #university #community #conversations

We Need to Talk About Disabilities
Disability is an aspect of diversity. When I think about my own identity, disability is a part of it. By not talking about it, I think we are trying to pretend that it doesn’t exist. Disability can be framed as an “us” and “them,” when in reality, we’re ultimately human. #diversability #disabilities #identity #conversations

Growing Together
If I could give a message to my community, it’s that we all matter. We should never discount the validity of our own stories and the fact that they need to be heard. #diversability #disabilities #stories #aloneness #community #growth

Words can mean different things, but these themes connect us
It’s important to have conversations past the, “What do you do?” Vulnerability and owning your story is huge. Connecting through themes like loneliness and happiness is important. Words can mean such different things to different people. #TheAOProject #AOcontributorfeedback #vulnerability #happiness #loneliness

What Makes the Trip Are the People
Happiness for me is having a great conversation with someone. Part of my trip to New York is catching up with people from my past. I’ve always said that what makes the trip are the people. #happiness #happymoment #conversations

The Pursuit of Happiness
Freedom, Independence and Self-care
Happiness is rooted in freedom and independence. It comes down to having control over my life and the way I live. Right now, happiness to me is self-care. There’s something abundant with having a body that’s cared for. #pursuitofhappiness #happiness #freedom

Good, Evil & Drawing the Line
The Spectrum of Good and Evil
I think we are all fundamentally good. There’s a spectrum where we can move closer to “evil.” Yet if we dig deeper, maybe we can figure out the triggers that led us there and move back along the spectrum. #goodandevil #good #evil

Discomfort Is Part of the Human Experience
In the past year, there has been uncertainty around a lot of things. I have been exploring what it’s like to be in that space and be okay with it. Uncomfortable moments are part of the human experience and it’s just as okay as feeling happy or in love. #anxiety #uncertainty #uncomfortablemoments #beinghuman #humanexperience

Dealing with Anxiety & Depression
It’s Going to Be Okay
I have a lot of anxiety. It’s a disability that I don’t vocalize. To deal with anxiety, I listen to music and dance around or ground myself in the idea that it’s going to be okay. #anxiety #dance #music

Being Respected and Putting in the Work
Social status and the need to feel respected means a lot to me, but I don’t want it to. I flow between wanting recognition and wanting to put the work in because the work matters most to me. #socialstatus

The Disability Space and Unemployment
The biggest problem that exists in the disability space is unemployment. A very high number of adults with disabilities also live in poverty. Not being able to support yourself financially can create a very negative narrative in terms of self-image. #money #unemployment #financialfreedom #disability #power #community

Money Is Freedom to Explore
Money is freedom to explore what interests me and live the type of life I want. Money is also power. Ten other people with disabilities and I have come together to each give $100 per month to someone in our community to turn an idea into reality. I am privileged to be in a position to represent my community and pay it forward within the community. #money #freedom

On Death: Fear & Other Feelings
A Rebirth That Was Neither Better Nor Worse
I’m not sure we’re ever overcoming anything, just living the best we can. I lost my father during Thanksgiving weekend 20 years ago, making that holiday about loss. Two years ago, I launched my project Diversability and that Thanksgiving I felt immense gratitude. It was like a rebirth that wasn’t better or worse, just different. #death #familyloss

Changing the Narrative
With disabilities, the narrative is often, “You can’t,” or this feeling of burden. Once we start to change the narrative to, “Let me try,” something shifts in the energy we invest in ourselves. #productivity #disability #wordsintoaction

Celebrate the Small Wins
Diversability started as a campus club and relaunched two years ago. The idea of launching Diversability as a business was daunting to me, but my friend suggested I host one event to see the response. It’s about starting small. The rest will fall into place when it’s time. #productivity #wordsintoaction

Loving Yourself
Embracing Ourselves
The first 10 years after the car accident which left me with brachial plexus palsy, I hated my body. Once I started bringing my arm back into my story, I started being more okay with it. We can start the journey to self-acceptance by embracing parts of ourselves that we try to reject. #selflove #selfacceptance #accident #body

Finding Self-love With a Disability: Part 2
After my father passed away from a car crash in which I acquired brachial plexus palsy, I faced isolation at home and exclusion at school. I refused to acknowledge what had happened until 15 years later. I was having a conversation on diversity when I realized that it needed to be talked about more. #selflove #disability

Finding Self-love With a Disability: Part 1
Twenty years ago, my dad drove us home from the airport and lost control of the car. He didn’t survive the crash and I acquired a nerve injury called brachial plexus palsy. When I went back to school, I was thrust into an environment I wasn’t prepared for. I was still trying to explore what my new body meant for my identity. #selflove #disability
