Namel “Tapwaterz” Norris, a hip-hop artist and motivational speaker, is Co-Founder of 4 Wheel City. The entertainment organization is dedicated to showing the world that people with disabilities can still have talents and dreams - and that they deserve equal treatment. He created 4 Wheel City with Ricardo “Rickfire” Velasquez after gun violence left them in wheelchairs. Namel was at his sister’s birthday party when he was 17, and his cousin started playing with a gun. The weapon accidentally fired, striking Namel in the neck and paralyzing him from the chest down. Three years earlier, a resident of the same Bronx neighborhood, Ricardo, was hit by a stray bullet. They struck up a friendship and formed 4 Wheel City in 2006. 4 Wheel City’s mission is to use hip-hop music and culture to create more opportunities for the disabled and to inspire people not to give up in life. It performs original music and delivers motivational speeches at hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, fundraisers and events, all over the world. Namel is also involved with Diversability, a global movement to rebrand disability.

Loving Yourself
When I Was 17 I Got Shot
When I was 17 years old, my cousin was playing with a gun one day and thought the safety was on. We lived in a negative way that led to the purchase of the gun in the first place and I think I was the one who loaded the bullet. There’s a message in it. #diversability #disability #cousin #gun #gunviolence #upbringing

It’s About the Person Listening
Conversations are important when they get people to look at themselves in the mirror. When these questions are done the right way, the person listening can leave with a different perspective or inspiration to better themselves. #TheAOProject #contributorfeedback

Bonds, Breakups & the Essence of Relationships
Love My Rawest Self
A person may not say how he really feels because he’s scared he might lose his partner or that the other person won’t understand him. The essence of a healthy, romantic relationship is to love the other person for who she is in the rawest sense. #romantic #relationship #love

Bonds, Breakups & the Essence of Relationships
From Attraction to Communication
The essence of a healthy, romantic relationship includes a high level of attraction and appreciation for the other person. From there, communication is key. I think a lot of people in relationships go along with societal pressure. #romantic #relationship #communication #commitment

Money, Society & Status
But Who Can Do What I Did?
From an American standpoint, social status is important and it can be achieved. I can name professions who earn a million dollars. I look at how I’ve paved my way, creating our own status within our own culture. I wonder how many people with those professions can do what I do. #socialstatus

Coming From Simplicity
Money can make you happy but it doesn’t make you happy. I am a simple person. When you come from simplicity and not having much, money is just extra. #money #happiness

The Role of Religion
I Use Religion As an Example
I use religion as an example and a metaphor. I feel like I’m a part of a religion, but I don’t look up to it. If you’re looking for something to have faith in, there’s plenty of examples from many religions. #religion #god #faith

The Role of Religion
The Spirituality in Music
It amazes me when people hear my songs and pick up a message from it because those songs can be very personal. It’s very spiritual, my friend Rick sends beats over that inspire me. We always feel like it’s bigger than us. #religion #spirituality #inspiration

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
Man on a Mission
Purpose found me. I wrote the song Man on a Mission where I used many biblical references because purpose is dealt with a lot in religion. The whole idea behind it was to give people inspiration to find their own purpose. #lifepurpose #mission #purpose #inspiration #religion

Music Inspires
Music inspires people in different ways. I create music and I can see how powerful it is. A song we made at my friend's house took us to the White House. Hearing feedback on what people take away from my music is motivational. #productivity #wordsintoaction #inspiration #passion #music

Dealing with Anxiety & Depression
I See Myself in Their Shoes
I understand depression. I speak to people who just got injured and I can see myself in their shoes. Many people who got injured face a lot of unknowns, and that’s where most of the anxiety and depression stems from. #depression #disability #anxiety #selflove

Dealing with Anxiety & Depression
A Few Months After I Got Shot
I was depressed in the first couple of months after getting shot. Initially everything was about the pain. Once the pain went away, I was in a wheelchair and realized there were many things I couldn’t do. It was a big change to deal with all at once. #depression #disability

In My Shoes
I wrote the song In My Shoes. It’s about life in a wheelchair. Everything I said was from my heart and there was a lot of self-love and acceptance in that. #selflove #disability #selfacceptance

Music and Self-love
I met Rick and we started 4 Wheel City. It was a musical outlet for all my frustration. Music gave me a place to express myself. One of the first songs I wrote was about self-love. I expressed my situation of being placed in a wheelchair through music. #selflove #disability #wheelchair

I Was in a Wheelchair at 17 Years Old: Part 2
As I was getting my college education, I was dealing with people everyday and that distracted me from the fact that I was in a wheelchair. My personality started to come out and little by little, I started coming to the surface. I was able to live in the moment. #selflove #disability #inthemoment

Loving Yourself
I Was in a Wheelchair at 17 years Old: Part 1
I got put in a wheelchair when I was 17 years old. It initially took a lot of my individuality and self-love away. Over time, I started becoming myself again, allowing people to identify me as someone they could relate to. #selflove

Self Love Is an Everyday Journey
I do have plenty of self love, but it is an everyday journey. Self love needs to be practiced. Situations where I need to make my own decisions and not follow the crowd is an example of when I show strong self love. #selflove #lovingyourself #journey
