Casey Erin Clark is a professional actress who, after 18 months on tour with Les Miserables, read the book Half the Sky and got very fired up about issues facing women in the world today. The answer to “What can I do?” came out of her knowledge of and passion for the human voice. Having spent the previous 10 years teaching vocal production, public speaking, accent modification, and singing to clients of all ages, she and partner Julie Fogh co-founded Vital Voice Training, a voice and speech coaching company out to change the conversation about what women are “SUPPOSED” to sound like and help clients speak, sell, pitch, and present their ideas with authentic confidence and a deep connection to their core values. Casey sang her first solo in church at 4 and was branded “bossy” back in kindergarten—she can recommend the best breakfast in most major cities in the US—and is happy to demonstrate the Lafayette speed rap from Hamilton.

Achieving Harmony & Balance
Harmony Through a Musician’s Eyes
As a musician, I think about inner harmony as my personality, past, dreams, and fears fitting together like a musical chord. Similar to how voices blend together to create melodies, I think about how different personalities blend together to create effects in the world. #harmony #beinghuman #balance #personalities

Loving Yourself
Taking My Own Advice
Teaching has given me a way to see how my students deal with the inability to love themselves and with failures. I let them know that failure in order to get better is part of the process. As a perfectionist, I have to take my own lesson and learn how to forgive myself even if I don’t get it right the first time. It’s better than not showing up. #selflove #beinghuman #forgive #perfectionism #teaching #failures

Matching Your Words With Action
I teach people how to talk. I love words, language and big ideas. You need to be able to stand behind your big ideas and match your words with your actions. You teach what you need to learn and you have to be able to exemplify what you teach. #actions #coaching #ownership #wordsintoactions

Women’s Voices Need to be Heard
I believe that women’s voices and ideas have to be heard. If we’re keeping down the voice of 51 percent of the population, how can we expect the best ideas to be heard? #voice #knowledge #ideas

Staying Away from Shit Starters
Everybody goes through periods of loneliness even when surrounded by people. Learning how to stay away from the negative energy of those who stir up drama is difficult but important. #loneliness #negative

The Feminism Movement
Reading Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, which portrays challenges women face, lit a fire in me. I see feminism as a diverse and messy movement but the biggest movements were not monolithic in how they worked. The common thread that joins this movement together is equality for women. When we incorporate that practice, it makes everyone’s lives better. #power #voice #books #passion

Leaving Our Bubble
Given the current political climate, the conversations around social status are fraught. I want to be a listener. Those of us born with privilege have to leave our bubble if we’re ever going to make the world a better place. #socialstatus

The Role of Religion
The Many Paths to Divine Energy
I value my upbringing and have chosen to let go of the aspects of Christianity that punish anyone who isn’t the ideal Christian. I believe in a divine energy that connects us, but I don’t believe that there’s one right way to get that. #divinity #higherpower #values #god #religion

Good, Evil & Drawing the Line
Good Is Both Self-Facing and Outward-Facing
Growing up Southern Baptist I had a clear line between good and evil. Part of growing up is learning there’s a lot of grey in between the black and white. Good has to be both self-facing and outward-facing but it can’t be entirely one or the other. #goodandevil #good #religion #evil

The Role of Religion
Our Potential for Goodness
An interesting part of the evangelical Christian religion is the idea that at our core, we are bad people and can only be saved by an external force. I believe in the potential for goodness in humans. Taking responsibility for our actions makes the world a better place, and we don’t need an outside deity to tell us that. #religion #ownership #good #beliefs

The Danger Behind Purity
Growing up Southern Baptist, there was a great emphasis on purity. As I get older, I find that damaging. It teaches young women to think of themselves as dirty after having a natural human experience. I teach my students that their desire is beautiful and a natural part of who they are. #sex #taboo #beinghuman #value #religion

Do Our Messes Match?
The reality is that we are all a mess in some way. You have to find the person whose mess matches your mess. You need to know what your deal-breakers are and not let the petty things get in the way. The key is growing together. #relationship #romantic #couple #grow

Going Into the Big Questions Is Necessary
Diving into the big questions and relieving the pressure of having to get it right so that we can be real with each other is absolutely necessary. Having real-life conversations where we can read the nuances of body language is when we can really see what someone actually believes. #TheAOProject #bigquestions #beliefs

Dealing with Anxiety & Depression
The Concept of Nerves
Anxiety for perfectionists comes from the idea of public failure and not being liked. The book Come as You Are by Emily Nagoski explains the concept of nerves well. The stress response is the oldest, least logical part of our brain telling us we’re not safe. Learning that nerves are a completely natural response plays a big role in overcoming anxiety. #anxiety #beinghuman #books #stress

Success looks different for everyone, which is a good thing. I started out thinking success was being on Broadway or winning a Tony Award, but I re-examined my vision of success, which has been very empowering. I now have a long list of my vision of success. #success #financialfreedom

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
Playing to Our Passion
In America, we deify the idea of playing with our passion. I’m a musical theater major, and in reality, it’s a bad way to make a living. Sometimes you can’t realistically do what you love. There’s always something to learn. I found transferrable skills from my major, and from that, I found my life purpose. #lifepurpose #passion #purpose

Loving Yourself
Not Everyone Will Like You
As a nerd, I mainly received attention from singing. I wanted to be liked and since I impressed people with my voice, it became the way I made others like me. A big part of my journey into adulthood has been recognizing that I can’t make everyone like me and can’t expect a good reaction when all I want is to impress people. I have learned how to connect, listen more and give the spotlight to others. #selflove #selfimprovement #journey

Discomfort is Like a Dissonant Note and Opens Our Eyes
Adding a dissonant note to a beautiful chord can make us feel uncomfortable, but it’s also exciting. Leaning into discomfort can give us a broader view of what the world is and can be. The dissonant note is all part of the chord, just like how discomfort is a part of life. #balance #discomfort #harmony
