Jordan, once referred to as “The Larry King of podcasting,” is a Wall Street lawyer turned talk show host, social dynamics expert, and entrepreneur. After hosting a top 50 iTunes podcast for over a decade that enjoyed nearly four million downloads a month at its zenith, Jordan has embarked on a new adventure: The Jordan Harbinger Show, where he deconstructs the playbooks of the most successful people on earth and shares their strategies, perspectives, and insights with the rest of us. Jordan’s business sense, extensive knowledge of the industry, and contemporary approach to teaching make him one of the best and most sought-after coaches in the world. He has always had an affinity for social influence, interpersonal dynamics, and social engineering, helping private companies test the security of their communications systems and working with law enforcement agencies before he was even old enough to drive. Jordan spent several years abroad in Europe and the developing world, including South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, and he speaks five languages. He has also worked for various governments and NGOs overseas, traveled through war zones, and been kidnapped — twice. He’ll tell you the only reason he’s still alive and kicking is because of his ability to talk his way into (and out of) just about any type of situation.

Honest, Unsexy Answers For A Successful Next Generation
It’s important for people to share their wisdom and stories because a lot of role models speak in sound bites, saying things like, "If you want it bad enough you’ll get it." If you have the right wisdom from people who honestly speak about their processes, work ethic and productivity, you can create a more successful next generation. #AlphaOmega #contributorfeedback

Loving Yourself
Loving Yourself Isn't the Same as Accepting Yourself Unconditionally
Loving yourself and accepting yourself unconditionally is not the same thing. I don’t think you should accept yourself unconditionally. That doesn’t mean hate yourself, but you shouldn’t be so accepting of all your negative habits. Loving yourself is caring enough about yourself to make changes in your life. #selflove #lovingyourself #selfimprovement

Everybody Wants To Acheive More
I grew up middle-class. At that point, I said I want more stuff. Then I worked on Wall Street and I was able to buy all the stuff. My perspective on money has changed, but I don’t find it realistic to tell people that they don’t need stuff. Realistically, everybody wants to achieve more. That’s the human drive. #success #drive #titles #achievement

There’s No Good Answer to Success
Success is tricky. I think a lot of people lie to themselves about what their definition of success is. I do think most people need to figure out what gives them stability so they can focus on freedom. In that case, success might mean opportunity and freedom, but it won’t mean the same thing to everyone. #success #freedom

The Pursuit of Happiness
We’re Too Focused on Happiness as an End Result
Science shows that focusing on happiness as an end results is one of the chief drivers of unhappiness and discontent. We need to be careful with this. We should focus on things that comprise happiness without thinking of them as things that bring happiness. #happiness

The Work Ethic Of High Performers
I’ve done almost 1,000 episodes of my show and I can’t pick a favorite. What I have noticed about high performers over the years is that they are willing to outwork everyone else. Their work ethic is second to none, even when luck has played a significant role in their lives. #productivity #wordsintoactions #drive #motivation

You Can’t Be Productive Without A Calendar
What I do is weeks before I do anything, I cut my calendar into 15 minute blocks. I wake up at five thirty or six, I immediately do whatever tasks I have to do, everything is in a 15 minute block. Doesn't mean each task is 15 minutes long, it means that everything is in a 15 minute block. So if I know I'm going to do an hour of email to chop down the amount of email I have in my inbox, then I will spend an hour doing that. If it's on the calendar, it gets done. It takes that amount of time. It doesn't go over, and if I finish early, I spend that time doing something else that's a flex task like more email, study some Chinese, whatever it is. But what I notice other people doing is they don't follow this. They just go, I have a to-do list, it's got 10 things on it, they make it through the first three, then the other seven roll over to the next day, which rolls over to the next day, and then they go, oh I'm so overwhelmed. You're not overwhelmed for any other reason other than you have no idea what you're doing next. If you figure out what you're going to do next, you don't have to worry about it. If you call me and you say, hey let's do lunch, and it's not on my calendar, either I can't do it or if I decide to prioritize that, I move whatever I have during the time and I put it at the end of the day. Because what most people do is they go, I'll do this later. Well, later never comes. But if I move that block 'cause I know I have a two hour task of recording a show and I move that to the end of the day, well now I know I'm not having dinner at seven, I'm having it at nine. So then I have to decide literally weeks, or in my case, months in advance, am I going to take this lunch meeting? No, because I don't want to be done with work at one a.m. I want to be done with work at seven so I won't do this. So it allows you to reprioritize, it allows you to figure out what's next, it allows you to avoid overwhelm. So there's no point in figuring out what app to use, there's no point in figuring out how to shave 10 minutes off of such and such task if you're not using a calendar. Because if you're not using a calendar, you have no idea what you're doing with your time, period. There's no other way around it.

Sleep and Self-Care are Key
I make sure I get enough sleep. I treat sleep like a business meeting; if I’m under-rested, nothing is going to get done the way it needs to. I also treat going to the gym like a business meeting. We need to reprioritize sleep and self-care. #productivity #health

Don’t Fix An Engineless Car
An interesting thing about productivity is that a lot of people try to shave a few minutes off different tasks without having a calendar. It’s like trying to fix car parts without having an engine in the car. When you don’t know what you’re going to do next, you’re letting other people dictate your agenda. #productivity #planning #timemanagement

Mentorship Versus Coaching
I find mentorship to be a buzzword. To me, mentorship has the connotation of “I’m going to follow you until I end up where you are,” which isn’t realistic. Coaching is completely different. Coaching is what you need in categories of your life where you want to get better. It’s absolutely important, and it’s important to be receiving coaching from a diverse group of people. #productivity #coaching #mentor

How I Built Up My Podcast
The problem I had with podcasting back in 2006 was that no one really knew what it was. Podcasting today, I always go to my old standbys: build and keep a great network, be ready to outwork everyone, and never be too good for coaching and improvement. #productivity #wordsintoactions #drive #motivation

From Wall Street to Podcasting
When I got to Wall Street, everyone was extremely smart and hardworking. I needed a different competitive advantage to thrive. I looked at what successful people in law firms were doing: they brought in business. This was a sales skill set, so I focused on networking and relationship development. I dove into verbal and nonverbal communication, rapport building, and being someone that others trust. #productivity #motivation #communication #connection #trust #relationships

Don’t Let Fear Stop You
I definitely experience fear of the unknown and of rejection. Being in business for over 11 years, I found that fear becomes a part of the journey. You shouldn’t steer yourself away from it. If you don’t feel any fear, there’s a good chance you’re doing something that doesn’t excite you anymore. Be aware of the fear and realize that it shouldn’t stop you. #productivity #fear #drive

It’s Scientifically Proven That People Can Change
People are capable of change - there’s science behind that argument. You can make changes every day, you just have to avoid trying to make drastic changes overnight. Those who don’t believe people can change only need to look as far as habit change science. #productivity #change #selfimprovement #actions #science

Books Won’t Change Your Life, Habits Will
I don’t think books change people’s lives very often. Not everyone applies lessons from books. I’d rather find one or two things people do everyday and turn them into habits. If I had to choose a book to recommend, it would be How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie because it can be applied to most people. But if it can’t be applied to you, it’s not useful. #productivity #books #change #actions

We Try Too Hard To Avoid Stress
There’s an emphasis on avoiding stress. While there’s something to that, you can’t run a business, have a family and focus on relationships without some amount of stress. People focus too much on ways to avoid stress. #stress #anxiety

Bonds, Breakups & the Essence of Relationships
Always Be Giving
After law school, I got hired as a Wall Street attorney. I knew I wasn’t going to be a lawyer for a long time so I started a podcast while looking for a new job. I also started meeting people from all walks of life because I wanted a sample of what different careers could be. I kept in touch with them and connected them with one another. That was the foundation for the network that changed my life completely. “What’s in it for me?” should never be a part of how you treat your relationships. #relationship #connection #support #contributing #givingback

Dig The Well Before You’re Thirsty
Friendships and connections are the most important things. This is true from a functional perspective too: the most important thing you can do is create a depth and breadth of relationships in and outside your industry. Most people look for relationships only when they need something. You need to have the safety net beforehand. Prioritize and deepen the ties of your relationships. #relationship #connection #support
