Erin Halper is the Founder and CEO of The Upside, which supports and grows independent consulting businesses for ambitious solopreneurs. Prior to launching The Upside, Erin built a consulting career developing marketing and deal sourcing platforms for her hedge fund and real estate private equity clients, collectively resulting in more than $3 billion in new funding for her clients. As Erin's consulting business grew, she learned that there was an extraordinary amount of talented and experienced executives in her same stage of life who wanted the type of flexible and rewarding career that she enjoyed, but perhaps didn't know where to start. On the flipside, Erin learned through her clients that there are a significant number of companies that are either overpaying for an outside agency to supplement their business needs or are simply going without, stretching their existing staff too thin. Acknowledging this gap in the market, Erin combined her instinctual matchmaking skills and seven years of consulting expertise to help others gain flexibility and independence in their careers, while also helping businesses acquire top talent that can flex and scale with their changing needs. The result is The Upside, a new kind of agency that aims to change the way working works in America.

Good, Evil & Drawing the Line
Driving Is a Good Example of Good and Evil
There was a snowstorm a few months ago and I was merging onto a street full of snow. I slowed and stopped to see if I could go to the other lane and the person behind me got angry. If I hadn’t stopped, I would’ve been hit by a truck. The point is that most people are good, and driving on the street is a good example of good and evil. Remember, somebody is always going through something. #goodandevil #good

Good, Evil & Drawing the Line
You Don’t Know What They’re Going Through
I truly believe most people in this world are good. Moving up to New York from the South, especially driving, I thought so many people were jerks. I realized that you have no idea what someone’s day is like and what they’re going through. #goodandevil #good

Finding & Defining Love
He Told Me I Wasn’t Memorable
I was in a destructive relationship and I remember telling my boyfriend at the time how upset I was that someone I’ve met ten times didn’t remember me. His response was, “you’re not that memorable”. It was a lightbulb moment for me to leave. Once I did, I felt stripped to my core. I recognized I needed to build myself back up again. #findinglove #selfawareness #selfesteem #selfimprovement

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
The Relativity of Purpose
I think life purpose is all relative. Where I’m from in South Carolina, everyone’s life purpose is incredibly different than in New York. I’ve always known I wanted to grow and scale my own business. At the same time, there are billion dollar CEOs who would never be satisfied with what I’m doing compared to them, but that’s not what I’m trying to be. #lifepurpose #purpose

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
Purpose, Impact and Meaning
Everyone has a life purpose but not everyone knows what it is. I always knew I wanted to own my business. When I found a business idea that could help people while making money, it was the perfect combination. It was meaningful to me, and it made an impact on people’s lives. #lifepurpose #purpose #ahamoment

Is This My Life Purpose? It Is Right Now
I get emails every week from women who said The Upside positively impacted their lives. It makes my day knowing someone is having a better work-life balance because of what The Upside is doing. Right now that’s my purpose, but I know there are other chapters for me. #lifepurpose #purpose #path

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
My First Business Deal
The first person my company matched with a business was a CPA who wanted to skip long commutes. She was extremely driven with so much to contribute. We were able to match her with a smaller firm two minutes away from her house, and when the deal went through, it brought me to so much joy to see everyone winning out of it. #lifepurpose #purpose #productivity

On Death: Fear & Other Feelings
Having No Regrets Combats Fear of Death
My father passed away of a sudden heart attack. He was healthy, he took care of himself and was energetic, but it happened to him. But living life in a way where you don’t have regrets, to me, combats that fear of death. #death #familyloss

Educated Women Who Left the Workforce Had Limited Choices
In 2016 I started noticing posts in my Facebook feed from women in my demographic selling items mainly in skincare. I realized there was a huge gap in the market. College educated women who had left the workforce only had choices between going back full time or not working at all. They wanted to build their own business. #productivity #actions #drive #motivation

Being a Startup Entrepreneur and a Mother
As a startup entrepreneur and a mother, you’re pulled in so many different directions at any given moment. It’s easy to say no to things, but as an entrepreneur, you need to be in it 100%. I learned to just start saying yes. That concept has brought me so many opportunities I never thought imaginable. #productivity #actions #parenting

As a Mother, It’s Okay to Follow Your Dreams
I don’t feel ashamed that my children will grow up having a mom who’s fulfilling her dreams. If that means I miss dinner once a week, it’s okay. So many women say no to starting something because they worry about their kids. My children are going to be just fine. They’ll grow up with a woman in the house who followed her dreams. #productivity #actions #parenting #lifepurpose

On Death: Fear & Other Feelings
I Fear Dying with Regrets
I’ve never really feared dying, but I fear dying with regrets. My husband lost his mother years before we met, and I can only describe the experience through his words. He said that something she had trouble with during her fight with lung cancer is she had a heavy heart that it was over smoking. She felt guilt that she wouldn’t be able to experience her children’s marriage or see her grandchildren. #death #fearofdeath #familyloss

Attracting The Type of Person I Wanted to Attract
I found myself single at age 29 and thought, “how am I going to meet someone at this stage?”. I decided to work backwards and describe the person who I wanted to be with. I realized I needed to live my life in a way that would be attractive to the type of person I wanted to attract. #findinglove #love

Even In Death, the Universe Has Got You
My husband made a speech at our wedding about how his mom had a hand in us meeting and getting married. If he hadn’t reconnected with a family friend during her funeral, we wouldn’t have met. I think it’s the perfect example of how the universe has your back even in death. #death #familyloss #findinglove #balance

On Death: Fear & Other Feelings
Death Can Lead to Unexpected, Beautiful Things
There are so many examples of how death can lead to something unexpected and beautiful. At my husband’s mother’s funeral, he reconnected with a childhood friend. She and I would talk about our boyfriends at the time, and decided to all meet up for dinner. Six years later, I reconnected with him randomly, and one year later we got married. #death #familyloss #findinglove #balance

I Found a Gap In The Market I Could Fill
Rodan & Fields was selling a turnkey business and they did an amazing job of selling a dream to women who had left the workforce. Bonds, Breakups & the Essence of Relationships
I See Friendship as a Dartboard
I used to get very irritated by people who didn’t show up or did something minor. A boyfriend in my early twenties said if I kept doing that to others, I wouldn’t have friends left. Now I look at friendship as a dartboard. It gives me perspective on who’s important in my life without alienating others. #relationship #connection

Without Communication, There’s No Relationship
Communicating in a truthful and raw way is so important. My husband taught me to be the best communicator I could possibly be. I remember the first time he recognized I was brushing something under the rug. He asked me about it, and when I spoke about it truthfully, I realized how relieved I felt. It is okay to be honest. #relationship #romantic #love #communication

The Three C’s To Love
At my wedding, my father-in-law gave a speech about marriage, and I remember three important things. The secret to a long, loving relationship are the three C’s: Communication, Commitment and Compromise. The most important of them is communication with 100% truth. #relationship #romantic #love #communication

You Need a Foundation of Trust
The relationship I had before I met my husband was very destructive. I mistook passion for love. It’s a mistake many people make. You need to have building blocks; a foundation of trust. When I got out of the relationship I was very upset with myself for letting someone manipulate me in that way. #love #negative #respect

Being Alone & Feeling Alone
Being A Yes Person
Saying yes was a solution to being lonely. I decided to be a yes person and see where that would take me. One day, a friend invited me to the Hamptons without set plans and I said yes. I saw someone I remembered from years ago at a restaurant. A year later I married that man. #loneliness #findinglove

Being Alone & Feeling Alone
I Would Never Meet Someone If I Stayed Home
Loneliness is one of my biggest fears. When I was in my 20s living by myself in the city I felt lonely. I realized I would never meet people staying in my apartment. So I would bring a book out to the city, and the hope alone of meeting someone while I was out there kept me from being lonely. #loneliness #aloneness

Quality Over Quantity
I recommend The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. It’s about what material items mean to different people, and how we make excuses for acquiring things. The lessons of quality over quantity that the author describes should be applied to all aspects of our lives. It’s truly life changing. #value #socialstatus

I Was Transported to His Life of Poverty
My favorite book, which impacted me so significantly, is Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. The author did a beautiful job describing what it was like to be a poor boy in Ireland. It transported me to his life and helped me understand the relative nature of materialism and what’s important in life. #money #value #books
