Being Alone & Feeling Alone
When I Moved to China, I Knew Nobody: Part 1
When I first moved to China for work, I knew nobody. At the same time, I felt a strong connection to my loved ones regardless of where they lived. I’ve always lived far from my parents, but knowing they’re always there for me helped combat loneliness. #loneliness #connection #support

Being Alone & Feeling Alone
Loneliness Helps You Feel Loved
Happiness is there because you can feel sadness. Loneliness is there in order for you to feel loved when people are around. Even if they’re not there, they’re thinking about you, and that thought can help counter loneliness. #loneliness

Finding & Defining Love
You Can Experience Love With No Results
Love can happen at any time and to anyone. I think love is a choice. If you want to and choose to, you can give love. I also think you can experience love with no results. We go searching with specific outcomes in mind, which often leads to disappointment. #love #findinglove

Trust Is the Foundation
Trust is the most important thing in any relationship. In any relationship, whether it’s a romantic one or a friendship, you have to trust each other and believe they have the best intentions for you. #relationship #connection #commitment #trust #friendship

Dealing with Anxiety & Depression
I Didn’t Realize I Was Depressed Until a Year Later
A lot of times, people don’t connect their physical health with their mental health. In the Chinese language, there’s little separation between physical and mental pain. When I broke my leg, I was isolated for months. I didn’t realize I was depressed until a year later when I realized I couldn’t get motivated to do things. #anxiety #depression

Just Listen
I talked about happiness being a choice, but sometimes it can be difficult to choose. If someone is going through a difficult time, it’s important to let them know you’re there for them. Let them know you’re just listening. #anxiety #depression #support #connection

Finding & Defining Love
Low Expectations Can Lead to Happiness
One of my good friend’s mom has the best quote. She says, “The key to happiness in life is low expectations." There’s some truth in that. When you have an over-attachment to a certain outcome, like finding a partner, you can find yourself disappointed. #love #findinglove #happiness #expectations

The Exposure Method
I think people go through life trying to avoid things they’re fearful of. The exposure method is actually effective; forcing yourself to go through a fearful experience and surviving it is the best way to train yourself to stop fearing. #anxiety #fear

The Intimate Tales
Something that really resonated with me was seeing how personal a lot of the AlphaOmega questions got. I don’t think we communicate enough, and it’s so easy to get stuck in our own heads. When you hear intimate tales from others, you realize how universal our experiences are, but how different perspectives can shape how people approach problems. #AlphaOmega #bigquestions #contributorfeedback

The Role of Religion
I’ve Softened My Relationship to Religion
For a long time, I’ve had an aversion to organized religion. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been able to see past the organization and into the parts that teach us about self-love and loving others. I never think anything should be taken to extremes; there should always be skepticism that you could be wrong. #religion #institutions #faith #selflove

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
Sustainability In the Fashion Industry
The environmental damage caused by the aftercare of clothing and the chemicals we put into clothing maintenance is mind-boggling. I wanted to create a company that built sustainability practices early on, and it’s a constant learning process. I took steps to make this company different than what was already out there. #lifepurpose #purpose #path #entrepreneur #sustainability

The Role of Religion
I Thought I Was Going to Hell
I started bawling in 6th grade once because one of my classmates found out I wasn’t religious. This led to a series of “you’re going to die in hell,” which scared me. What was worse was my friend told me my grandfather, who lived and died in a small town in China, was burning in hell. I went to church after that experience but I still didn’t believe in god, which made me feel so bad about myself. #religion #institutions

The Role of Religion
Moving from China to the Bible Belt
Being born in China, I grew up a-religious. When we moved from Michigan to Arkansas, which was in the middle of the Bible Belt, that was a bigger culture shock to me than moving from China to the U.S. #religion #institutions

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
Why I Became a Designer
I wouldn't have ever expected starting a company. I became a designer because I was shy and wanted to draw in my corner. It wasn’t my goal to be an entrepreneur, but I’ve worked in fashion for a long time, and at the end of the day I felt that I wanted to have something with purpose. I wanted a company that took sustainability much more seriously. #lifepurpose #purpose #path #entrepreneur

Finding & Fulfilling Our Purpose
You Found Your Purpose, Then What?
I don’t know if people will ever find their life purpose. What do you do after you find it? It’s important to live purposeful lives with intention. Purpose can be less grand than people expect it to be, as long as you’re doing what you want with your time. #lifepurpose #purpose #path

Achieving Harmony & Balance
The “Go Go Go” Fashion Industry
I picked fashion because I loved the creativity, beauty and energy in the industry. Everyone has a very intimate relationship to clothing. The industry tends to have a jam-packed “go go go” mentality. Sometimes you just have to stop and take a breath. #harmony #balance #burnout

Achieving Harmony & Balance
Who’s Busier Than Who in New York
As New Yorkers, it’s easy to get sucked into the “who’s busier than who” competition. I find it creeping up because it’s so innate in our culture. Everyone comes here with a burning passion to do things. It wears down on you though, and I’ve left several jobs where I was burnt out. #harmony #balance #burnout

Achieving Harmony & Balance
Burnout In the Fashion Industry
People working in the fashion industry often forget to take care of their bodies. When your physical body breaks down, so does your mental capacity. Take room to be physically well; it’ll lead to more mental creativity. #harmony #balance #creativity

If You’re Curious and You Pursue It, You’re a Creative
I often hear people say they’re not creative. I think creativity is an innate human trait. I think society often limits its view of creativity to the arts, but it comes in all forms. Thinking about how you approach a new problem takes creativity - even taking a new route home. #productivity #creativity

My Old-School Approach to Productivity
I’m still very old school when it comes to productivity. Everyone has their lives on their phones, but my to-do lists are still analog. Breaking down tasks into small components makes them feel do-able and checking them off motivates you to do more. #productivity #wordsintoactions #planning #timemanagement

They Sacrificed Their Comfort for Me
I broke my leg badly a few years ago, and my friends took turns sleeping on the air conditioner ledge next to my hospital bed just so I had someone throughout the night with me. It brings tears to my eyes to think someone would care so much about me that they would sacrifice their comfort. It was very touching. #loneliness #connection #support #relationship #friends #injury

Being Alone & Feeling Alone
By Default, We’re All Somewhat Lonely
Loneliness is okay, but there’s this idea in our society that it’s shameful to be lonely. I wish we looked at it differently. In some way, we’re all lonely because you’re the only person with your thoughts, which no one else could understand the full spectrum of. #loneliness #aloneness

The Perpetual Journey
Self-love is a perpetual journey. Anyone who says they’ve figured it out is probably not quite there yet. You have to be actively participating in it all the time. When you face perceived failures, you have to be able to tell yourself it’s okay. #selflove #lovingyourself

The Pursuit of Happiness
Breaking The Asian Parent Stereotype
There’s a stereotype that Asian parents just want their children to be high-achieving. One of my favorite moments was asking my mom what expectations she had of me, and she responded, “I want you to be happy.” Happiness comes from within. You can see people without material wealth that are happy, and people with everything that aren’t. #happiness #gratitude

Being Able to Assess Your Capabilities
Something I had on my dating profile was that I value people who have a high level of self-awareness. It’s important to be self-aware and to assess what you’re capable of, and focus your energy on those things. You should have enough awareness to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. #selflove #selfawareness #strengths #weaknesses
